A bleaching composition comprises a solid mixture of ammonium, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal chlorite with a stabilizing and actuating quantity of one or more water soluble salts of one or more alipthatic or aromatic carboxylic acids, e.g. sodium benzoate, acetate, citrate, formate, propionate or oxalate. The composition may contain the carboxylate and chlorite in the molar ratio of carboxylate to chlorite of from 0.02 : 1 to 0.17 : 1. The composition may also contain wetting agents, e.g. nonyl-phenyl-polyethylene glycol ether containing 4 molecules of ethylene oxide per molecule and the sodium salt of diisobutyl naphthalene sulphonic acid, corrosion-preventing agents, buffer substances, e.g. disodium hydrogen phosphate, and optical bleaching agents, e.g. stilbene derivatives. The compositions may be produced by simply mixing the components together, by spraying a solution of the additional components on to the ammonium or alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorites and then drying or by spray-drying a solution of the components. Liquid bleaching concentrates, which upon dilution may be used to bleach cotton cloths, may be obtained by dissolving the solid composition in water. |
