[Also in Division C3] The adhesion of an acrylic base finish to silicone impregnated leather is promoted by applying to the grain or buffed surface of the leather a film of a copolymer of 45 to 72% of ethyl acrylate, 12 to 30% of methyl methacrylate, 5 to 25% by weight of a silane of R | formula: CH 2 =#CCOO(CH 2 ) 3 Si(OR') 3 in which R is hydrogen or methyl, and R' is an alkyl radical of less than 7 carbon atoms or a radical of the formula: -(CH 2 CH 2 O) n R" in which R" is an alkyl radical of less than 7 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2 and 5 to 20% of glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate and then allowing the film to cure to a non-tacky condition before application of the acrylic finish. A nitrocellulose lacquer may be applied over the acrylic finish. The primers may be applied by airless spraying or roller from a solution of concentration 5% using, as solvent, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethylacetate or other oxygenated solvents. |
