摘要 1, 040, 118. Coating webs. HAMILTON TOOL CO. Aug. 4, 1964 [Nov.18, 1963], No. 31388/64. Heading D1L. [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for applying hot-melt fluid glue to a moving web 56 comprises a glue applicator nozzle 190, means for continuously advancing the web 56 across the nozzle 190, a reservoir 226 for hot-melt glue, a conduit 92 to supply glue from the reservoir, a pump 90 to receive glue from the conduit 92 and force it under pressure through the nozzle 190, and means for maintaining the reservoir 226, the conduit 92 and the pump 90 in heated condition. Paper or other strip material is paid out from rolls 30, Fig. 2, arranged above a table 32 upon which the webs are superposed one upon another and glued together by glue stripes. Any desired number of rolls 30 in groups may be mounted in supports 40. Webs 56, 58, 60 are continuously withdrawn from the rolls 30 by feed rolls 54 driven from a main shaft 46, driven by a motor 44, by a chain 50 and a shaft 52. Glue applicators 42 have pumps driven by a shaft 62 from the shaft 46 by a chain 64 through an overrunning clutch 66. An auxiliary motor 68 can be used to drive the shaft 62 when the motor 44 is at rest. Sprockets 80, equal in number to the number of applicators 42, fixed to the shaft 62 drive sprockets 82 of the applicator pumps by chains 84. The margin of a web, e.g. 56, to be coated passes over a nozzle head 86 on one applicator 42. Oppositely disposed applicators may be provided to coat both margins of a web. The pump comprises two rotary impellers 90, Figs. 10 and 11, in a casing 88 and adapted to draw liquid glue from a supply pipe 92 via a branch pipe 94 and direct glue to a nozzle head 86 which coats the web 56, for example. The connection between the pipes 92, 94 comprises a coupling member 104, Fig. 13, spanning nipples 98, 102 to provide a flexible connection and comprises a rigid tube enclosing resilient discs 106 centrally perforated and with rigid ring inserts 108. In each applicator 42 the shafts 112, 114 of the impellers 90 are driven by a shaft 116 having gearing and clutch means associated therewith to selectively operate either or both impellers 90. When the sprocket 82 is rotated a drive pin 120 thereon engages a pin 122 on a handwheel 118 to rotate the shaft 116. The pin drive allows the handwheel 118 to be rotated manually independently of the sprocket 82 to shift gears in the impeller drive chain. A low speed gear 134 in constant mesh with a gear 126 keyed to the shaft 116 is freely rotatable upon the shaft 114. Similarly, a high speed gear 136 is freely rotatable on the shaft 114 and is in constant mesh 128 keyed to the shaft 116. The shaft 114 may be connected to either of the gears 134, 136 by a shift rod 138 slidable in a bore 140 of the shaft 114 and carrying pins 142, 144 slidable in a slot 146. To drive the impeller 90 at high speed the pin 144 enters a radial notch 148 in the gear 136 so that this gear drives the shaft 114 and, similarly, to drive the impeller at low speed the pin 142 enters a notch 150 in the gear 134. The pins 142, 144 may be positioned to occupy a space between the gears 134, 136 so that the shaft 114 is not rotated. A hand lever 156, Fig. 11, is fixed to a cam barrel 156 having an oblique or spiral cam slot 160, Fig. 10, and which is mounted for rotation on the rod 138. Upon limited rotation of the barrel 158 by the lever 156, a follower 164 fixed to the casing 88 coacts with the slot 160 to shift the barrel 158 and the rod 138 to place the pins 142, 144 in either of the driving positions or in the neutral position. The shaft 112 is driven similarly to the shaft 114. Liquid glue is fed from the impellers 90 through bores 176, 178 in a block 174 fixed to the casing 88. The bores 176, 178 terminate, at their outer ends, in ports 180, 182, Fig. 14, in a mandrel 186 integral with the block 174 and received in the nozzle head 86. Radially disposed nozzles 190 are formed in the head 86 and may, by rotation of the head 86 about the mandrel 186, be placed in selective registry with the ports 180, 182. The glue applicator 42 is provided with an electric heating element 200, Fig. 10, preferably located near the glue supply nipple 102 and the impeller chamber 100 and may be controlled by a thermal unit 204 including an electric switch and a heat-responsive probe 206 alternately to open and close the heating element circuit to maintain the desired glue temperature. The block 174 may be heated by a separate heating element (not shown) connected in the circuit controlled by the unit 204. The glue in the pipe 92 is heated by a heater rod 110 running lengthwise thereof. The temperature of the rod 110 may be controlled by a thermostatic heat control unit 216, Fig. 9 (not shown), having a probe 218 buried in a convector block 220 surrounding a section 222 of the rod 110. A glue melting pot 226 is constructed in the manner of a domestic pressure cooker and has a sealing cover 228 with a central vent 230 connected to a source of air under pressure to maintain a constant pressure head in the glue supply system. The glue passes through a filter element 240 and through a pipe 236 into the pipe 92. The melting pot 226 is fixed to a carriage 254 which rides upon rollers 256 on the machine bed to shift the pot therealong to compensate for lengthwise expansion and contraction of the pipe 92 due to temperature variations therein. A schematic wiring diagram of the electrical control circuits of the glue distributer system is given, Fig. 19 (not shown)
