An accumulator electrode comprises a sheet 12 of intermingled conductive fibres with active material 14 disposed on and within it, the active material comprising iron oxide or hydroxide and at least 5 weight per cent of an additive comprising sulphur, selenium, or tellurium or a sulphide, selenide or telluride. The fibres may be of nickel or iron, woven or unwoven, e.g. nickel wool. The iron oxide or hydroxide may be FeO, Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 or Fe(OH) 3 . It may be prepared by adding aqueous KOH to an aqueous solution of ferrous ammonium sulphate or ferric ammonium sulphate. The additive may be elemental sulphur or iron sulphide. It may be introduced by mixing iron oxide with flowers of sulphur, colloidal sulphur or a solution of sulphur in CS 2 or by replacing some of the KOH used to prepare the oxide with K 2 S. The active material may contain up to 66 weight per cent of the additive and 10-50 weight per cent of carbon. It may be applied to the sheet 12 as a slurry in water, pressed in with filter paper and dried. Terminal 16 of nickel may be crimped on. The electrode may be used between a pair of nickel electrodes in an alkaline cell with aq. KOH as electrolyte. |
