Nuclear reactor control elements are formed of particles 1, having a boride core 3, enclosed in a pyrolytic carbon layer 4 and a silicon carbide layer 5. The particles 1 are embedded in a binder 2, and heated under pressure to form a control element suitable for use in a pebblebed reactor. In an alternative form, Fig. 3, the particles 1 are poured into the space 8 formed between the graphite body 6 and the graphite shell 7. |
