<p>A method of preparing 4-alkyl-3-alkoxyaniline of formula (I), where R1 is linear or branched 1-10C alkyl or aralkyl in which the alkyl portion is linear and comprises 1-4 carbon atoms and the aryl portion is phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted, in particular by one or more 1-3C alkyl, several halogen atoms, or by one or more nitro radicals, R2 is a linear or branched 1-16C alkyl, from a compound of formula (IV), where R3 is same as R2, comprises the steps of: (a) O-alkylating the free hydroxyl function of the compound of formula (IV) by reacting, in the presence of a base, with an alkylation agent, in a polar solvent, to produce an intermediate compound of formula (VI); (b) reducing the carbonyl group and hydrolyzing the amide group of the intermediate compound of formula (VI) by reacting with hydrazine and a base in a polar solvent and recovering the 4-alkyl-3-alkoxyaniline.
