PURPOSE: Provided are a system and method for guiding a cryocatheter through the vasculature of a patient to position a distal end of the cryocatheter at a predetermined site in the vasculature. CONSTITUTION: The system includes a connector(44) that is incorporated with a distal end of a cryocatheter and is formed with a passageway configured to receive a guide wire(22). The guide wire is pre-positioned in the vasculature of a patient and leads to a predetermined site. When the connector is engaged with the guide wire, the cryocatheter is advanced along the guide wire and through the vasculature to position the distal end of the cryocatheter at the predetermined site. The cryocatheter includes a catheter(32) and a tip(38). The catheter has a proximal end and a distal end(36), and is formed with a wall surrounding a lumen(50) that extends between the proximal and distal ends of the catheter.
