The procedure for decorating tanned leather, e.g. on footwear (1), consists of tattooing the leather surface by repeatedly pricking it with a needle (5) coated with a pigment in liquid or paste form, after first treating the surface with a solvent, preferably acetone, on a pad. After applying the solvent the leather is allowed to dry for at least 30 minutes and preferably an hour. The tattooing, which can be preceded by repeated pricking of the dry leather, is performed with at least one titanium steel needle, and preferably three needles at a time secured in a bundle and connected to an electrical actuator (6), the points of the needles penetrating the leather to a depth of at least 0.5 mm. The pigment is preferably an alcohol-based ink.
