PURPOSE: A cold tip radio frequency/ultrasonic ablation catheter is provided to safely ablate internal tissues by using radio frequency or ultrasonic energy. CONSTITUTION: A cold tip radio frequency/ultrasonic ablation catheter(10) comprises a catheter body having an open end(14), and a closed end(16) which defines a catheter tip and forms a chamber in the catheter body, wherein the catheter body is formed of a lumen; a unit for directing energy into internal tissues from the catheter so as to ablate internal tissues; a supply tube having ends with orifices formed at the closed end of the catheter body, wherein the supply tube is disposed in the lumen of the catheter body having orifices positioned in the chamber adjacent the catheter tip; and a unit for introducing a fluid refrigerant into the supply tube so as to expand the fluid refrigerant into the chamber through the orifices to cool the catheter during ablation of tissues.
