PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which a deviation caused the reading of an image is effectively inhibited by keeping a cumulative error of a drive signal of a PS roller to the minimum, to solve a deterioration of a picture fundamentally, and to provide a copying machine provided with it. SOLUTION: At the time of reading of a document image, a drive signal 4 steps of the PS roller which tend to be behind to phasing signal 3 lines of a CCD line sensor are so controlled as to be synchronized for each timing of the phasing signal 3 lines of the CCD line sensor and the drive signal 4 steps of the PS roller which corresponds to the least common multiple in signal periods of the phasing signal of the CCD line sensor and the drive signal of the PS roller.
