PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the deterioration of image quality more than in the conventional manner by providing a means for detecting the number of pieces of dust and the width of the dust from a dust detection result and setting a reading position that prevents the influence of the dust as much as possible from the number of pieces of dust and the width of the dust even at the time of detecting the dust at all reading positions. SOLUTION: An image reader includes an optical scanning means for optically scanning an original and a photoelectrically converting means for photoelectrically converting an optical image obtained by the optical scanning means. An original feeding device for automatically feeding an original is freely attachable and detachable to/from the image reader. The image reader has a means for detecting the existence/absence of stains and flaws attached on glass for reading a moving image of an original in a pixel unit and sets the image reading position on the basis of detection results of the detecting means.
