VIDEO DISPLAY APPARATUS AND VIDEO DISPLAY METHOD

A video display apparatus for allowing appropriate display areas to be produced automatically or by simple manual operations when combinations of video signals and contents having different aspect ratios are displayed on display devices having different aspect ratios. The video display apparatus comprises a display area magnifying part for magnifying, based on a magnification ratio, a display area of an inputted video signal in at least one of horizontal and vertical directions; a selection part for automatically setting, based on information of the aspect ratio of a display device, information of the aspect ratio of the video signal and information of the aspect ratio of the content that is the active portion of the video signal, the magnification ratio of at least one of the horizontal and vertical directions to be used by the display area magnifying part; and the display device for displaying the display area of the video signal.
