The exhaust gas cleaning device (30) has a solid filter (18) to trap solids in the gas, and a device for determining a parameter value correlating with the temperature of this filter. A device for controlling the compulsory regeneration which automatically increases the temperature of the filter at a predetermined interval undertakes an adaption of the interval based on the cumulative recording of conditions at which the said parameter value has passed beyond the value corresponding to the temperature of the continuous filter regeneration. Independent claim describes method for cleaning exhaust gases of engines which includes a stage for determining a parameter value and a stage for adapting the intervals.
