REDUCTION OF ARTEFACTS IN DIGITAL VIDEO CODING

Video coding methods enabling the improvement of a compressed video sequence by including in he compressed representation information as to where a correction process should be applied by the decoder which has the effect of reducing or eliminating the visibility of, for example, block edges in block-based compression schemes. In a block-based compression scheme, the set of possible places to which the correction process might usefully be applied is the set of edges of blocks introduced into the current frame. A decision as to whether or not to mark a particular location as a location to which a correction process should be applied at the decoder may be taken by reference to the structure of the source frame at that place, or to the structure of the current compressed representation at that place, or both.
