摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator capable of enhancing the utilization efficiency of light even when the aperture of a collimating lens is not made large, and a projector. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with a light source lamp unit having an ellipsoidal reflector, the collimating lens disposed on the area-to-be-illuminated side of the light source lamp unit, a 1st ellipsoidal reflection mirror disposed around the collimating lens and reflecting light from the ellipsoidal reflector, and a 2nd ellipsoidal reflection mirror disposed on the light source lamp unit side of the 1st ellipsoidal reflection mirror and reflecting the light from the 1st ellipsoidal reflection mirror. The 1st focal position of the 1st ellipsoidal reflection mirror and the 2nd focal position of the 2nd ellipsoidal reflection mirror are aligned with the 2nd focal position of the reflector, and also the 2nd focal position of the 1st ellipsoidal reflection mirror and the 1st focal position of the 2nd ellipsoidal reflection mirror are aligned on the optical axis of the light source lamp unit. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p>
