PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gland packing for a rotary/reciprocating device capable of maintaining excellent seal performance for a long period without contamination of inner fluid in a case of use in a shaft seal part for water type fluid. SOLUTION: Water-swelling type mineral is attached or impregnated on or in gland packing base material. The water-swelling type mineral is water-swelling type mica, preferably. The gland packing is less likely to cause seizure, and it achieves excellent seal performance, even with less leak quantity of inner fluid or injection fluid for lubrication in a slide surface compared to conventional examples.
