PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent adhesion of mutual single fibers and to provide high-strength carbon fibers with good productivity in production of a carbon fiber strand. SOLUTION: A precursor fiber strand for the carbon fibers comprises a silicone compound, a nonsilicone liquid compound, a compatibilizing agent and an emulsifying agent. A finish oil having≥0.25 logarithmic damping factor of a rigid body pendulum and≥1.5 s<SP>-1</SP>reciprocal of oscillation period at 145°C measured by a free damping oscillation method of the pendulum is applied thereto.
