PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenol resin for a frictional material which exhibits excellent heat resistance when used as a binder for a frictional material and a phenol resin composition for a frictional material obtained by blending the same. SOLUTION: The phenol resin for a frictional material has a repeating unit represented by general formula (I) in a molecule. The phenol resin composition for a frictional material contains the same.
