PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejector in which choking of a nozzle can be prevented and the quantity of liquid being consumed during cleaning can be reduced. SOLUTION: An ink jet printer comprises a recording head 20 provided with a nozzle group of a plurality of nozzles for ejecting ink drops, and a channel valve for controlling ink supply to the recording head 20. The ink jet printer further comprises a pump unit 24 for sucking ink in the recording head 20 by applying a negative pressure to the nozzle group, and a section 25 for detecting ejection of an ink drop from each nozzle. In such an ink jet printer, cleaning is performed by opening a channel valve corresponding to such a nozzle as an ink drop is not detected at the ejection inspecting section 25 and discharging ink in the recording head 20 by applying a negative pressure to the nozzle group of the recording head 20.
