PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method for a fire grate waste incinerator capable of further reducing NOx by suppressing the generation of NOx due to the combustion of char on a rear combustion fire grate and the waste incinerator for performing the method. SOLUTION: In this waste incinerator having a stepwise fire grate, a gas blowing port 14 is provided in the upper part of a step part between the combustion fire grate 4 and the rear combustion fire grate 5. The waste incinerator comprises a gas blowing means blowing exhaust gas or the mixture of the exhaust gas and air from the gas blowing port 14 onto a char layer 41 on the rear combustion fire grate 5.
