The method involves passing a test signal from the converter to the motor (10) while the motor is not running, so that a magnetizing characteristic is produced from a recorded time profile of the response to the test signal, from which a characteristic point near the maximum curvature is determined, whose coordinates are used in identifying electrical parameters of the motor and for parameterising regulation of control of an associated converter.
