<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium nickel composite oxide for a positive electrode active material for lithium secondary battery with high initial capacity. <P>SOLUTION: The lithium nickel composite oxide, composed of spherical secondary particles with an average particle diameter of 5-15 μm, of which, Li seat occupancy of Li site in the crystal measured by Rietveld analysis is not less than 98%, is expressed by a general formula Li<SB>X</SB>(Ni<SB>1-y</SB>Co<SB>y</SB>)<SB>1-Z</SB>M<SB>Z</SB>O<SB>2</SB>(0.98≤X≤1.10, 0.05≤Y≤0.4, M is not less than one kind of Al, Z, Ti and Mg).
