<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image display which is inexpensive and highly feasible and shows a high utilization efficiency of light by adopting a structure in which the rectangular illumination regions of respective colors scan on a single image display element. <P>SOLUTION: White light emitted from a light source is separated into individual color beams of red, green and blue with a color separating optical system and reflected on respective rotating polygon mirrors. Then, the rectangular illumination regions of respective colors are formed on the image display element by compositing the color beams by a color compositing optical system. The individual rectangular illumination regions scan on the image display element by the rotation of the rotating polygon mirror and the individual pixels of the image display element are driven by a signal corresponding to the color of light incident to the pixel. The color separating optical system and the color combining optical system are composed of two dichroic mirrors, respectively, and the four dichroic mirrors are arranged substantially in parallel. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
