PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element that has high emission luminance, superior quantum efficiency and a long half lifetime, and a display device, and in particular, an organic EL element which has achieved the compatibility of improved emission luminance and luminous efficiency and durability in blue color emission, and a display device of high luminance and good durability using the same. SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent element which comprises at least one layer of luminous layer and in which light emission from the luminous layer contains phosphorescent emission, a carbazole derivative compound as expressed by the formula is contained in one of layers constituting the organic electroluminescent element.
