PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printer in which maintenance work of an ink jet head can be carried out surely without requiring any extra space. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a frame, an ink jet head 14 supported on the frame to elevate/lower freely, and a shutter 18 movable under the ink jet head traversely thereto. When the ink jet head is located at an elevated position and the shutter is located under the ink jet head, a part 42 of the frame around the ink jet head and the shutter 18 form an ink suction chamber 50 for the nozzle surface of the ink jet head 14.
