<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save the cost and to efficiently utilize the resources, by permitting the changing of setting for counting the printing number, in a printer after the shipment of the product. <P>SOLUTION: In a panel operational part 11 or an external operational device 30, either of a method for counting the number of sides or a method for counting the number of sheets is selected, and is sent to and stored in a nonvolatile memory 14 via a main control part 18. In a counter control part 15, which receives paper discharge information from an engine 16, it is determined whether duplex printing is set for the job, on the basis of duplex printing information from the main control part 18. When the duplex printing is not set, the increment of the counter is set to "1". When it is set, the increment of the counter is set to "2" when the method for counting the number of sides is set, or is set to "1", when the method for counting the number of sheets is set.
