METHOD AND DEVICE ACCOMMODATING GROWTH OF DEFECT OF DATA STORAGE MEDIUM THROUGH DYNAMIC RE-MAPPING

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep balance between the storage capacity and the reliability more appropriately by improving a method for dealing with the growth of defects of a data storage medium. SOLUTION: One or more previously identified defects on a data storage medium are analyzed, growth of the defects are detected (block 58) over time, the detected growth of the defects previously identified can be accommodated for through the dynamic re-mapping of an additional surface region being adjacent to the defects to one or more replacement regions located elsewhere on the storage medium (routine 70). Therefore, a buffer region provided around the defects already existing is kept effectively for growth of the defects over time, thus maintaining an appropriate protection function for disappearance of data caused by intending to store information in a region affected by the adjacent defects.
