WEATHER RESISTANT CAST IRON, AND PRODUCTION METHOD THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide weather resistant cast iron whose corrosion resistance can be improved while obtaining properties such as casting and vibration damping properties as advantages characteristic of cast iron, and to provide a production method therefor. SOLUTION: The weather resistant cast iron is composed of: a cast iron body which has an iron-carbon based cast iron composition comprising, by weight, at least one of 0.5 to 4.3% nickel, 0.1 to 1.5% copper and 0.05 to 1.5% molybdenum and in which graphite is dispersed at the inside; and a rust preventive layer formed on the surface of the cast iron body and consisting essentially of black rust. The black rust consists of tri-iron tetroxide (Fe3O4), and forms a dense film. The cast iron body is heated to a temperature region of 500 to 1,200°C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to form the rust preventive layer. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
