A method is provided for determining the dissolution rate of an analyte, which is preferably a pharmaceutically active component in a sustained release dosage form. The method comprises(i) contacting a diluted non-aqueous composition containing the analyte and a non-aqueous base, such as a wax or a fat, with an aqueous dissolution medium for a predetermined time, and (ii) measuring the amount of anaalyte in the aqueous dissolution medium.
