PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backup/recovery device capable of backup and recovery by means of a single hard disk body without depending on an OS and a BIOS. SOLUTION: The backup/recovery device 10 connected between a motherboard 2 and an HDD 3 is changed in mode depending on the combination of the states of a cylinder keyswitch 16 and a protect switch 17 during the startup of a personal computer 1. In a through mode, data are exchanged between the motherboard 2 and the HDD 3. In a backup mode, data stored in the master boot record storage area and the first user data storage area of the HDD 3 are backed up in physical sector units in a backup data storage area, In a recovery mode, the data are recovered between the same storage areas.
