PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a map image in an optimum display form reflecting a user's intention. SOLUTION: A region indicated by a name which is the object of instruction input by the user is defined as a name definition region. Information of the name definition region, information of a center position and information of an optimum display scale capable of displaying almost whole the region of the name definition region in one screen in most details, are stored. When an instruction is inputted to change the map image designating such a name, the various types of information is read to display a map image of the optimum display scale with the center position of the name definition region as the display center.
