PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high-speed and accurate focusing control regardless of the position of a subject within a photographic image by utilizing external light AF and the image signal of an imaging device. SOLUTION: The focal position of a photographic lens 11 is decided according to relation between the position of the lens 11 and the contrast of the image signal obtained on the imaging device 12 through the lens 11. The position and the distance of the subject within the photographic image are obtained by light receiving lenses 21a and 21b and sensor arrays 22a and 22b. Then, a plurality of combinations of the position of the lens 11 with an image pickup area used in the case of focusing are obtained by a CPU 15 according to the positional information and the distance information from the sensor arrays 22a and 22b.
