PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a patterned perpendicular magnetic recording medium having high planarity/patterning accuracy/mechanical strength and a substrate for the perpendicular magnetic recording medium, and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: A supporting layer 1 of a nonmagnetic basic substance of aluminum or glass is provided thereon with a surface layer 3 having rugged patterns through an adhesion layer 2. The adhesion layer 2 is an organic-inorganic hybrid composition including a polymeric composition containing a metal-containing derivative compound and a polymeric derivative compound. The metal-containing derivative compound is an alkoxide, phenoxide, acylate or chelate compound consisting of the metal selected from the group consisting of Al, Ti, Zr, Si, In, Zn, Ni, and Cu as a central metal. The polymeric derivative compound is a compound essentially consisting of a monomer, oligomer or polymer containing the functional group selected from a hydroxyl group, carboxyl group and amino group and having a (meth)acryloyl group at its terminal.
