PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochemical display device which can realize excellent display characteristics by suppressing the deterioration in display density by a change in time and a driving method for the same. SOLUTION: The time when a writing voltage is impressed to pixel electrodes is controlled to assign intensity levels in displaying images by impressing the voltage to the pixel electrodes of respective pixels to deposit and melt metals. At this time, the current density to be run to the pixels by the writing voltage is so set as to attain≤50 mA/cm<SP>2</SP>and the time when the writing voltage is impressed is divided to a plurality of subfields and the time when the writing voltage is impressed is controlled by selecting whether the voltage is impressed or not in each subfield.
