PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a polarized-light converting element whose manufacturing efficiency is improved and which is easy to manufacture. SOLUTION: Both the polarized-light separating surface 212 and reflecting surface 214 of a light-transmissive member 211 have polarized-light separating films 216. S-polarized light is reflected by a polarized-light separating surface 212 and further reflected by the reflecting surface 214 to be emitted. P-polarized light, on the other hand, is transmitted through a polarized-light separating surface 212 as it is. The P-polarized light transmitted through the polarized-light separating surface 212 is converted into S-polarized light by aλ/2 retardation plate 201 provided on an emission surface. Since the light-transmissive member 211 is equipped with a plurality of polarized-light separating surfaces 212 and a plurality of reflecting surfaces 214 in a single body, the manufacture of the polarized-light separating element 200 is made easier.
