The drive unit has a drive mechanism (6) rotatable in reciprocating manner inside a predetermined angular operating range wherein a first element (75) is driven by the drive mechanism and a second element (5) is driven by the first element when in contact therewith. The first and second element are mounted on a common shaft and engage with each other through an engagement mechanism (31,32) so that they rotate as one unit with each other inside a first predetermined angular range when the first element drives the second element so that it rotates. The first element can have an output gearwheel (75) mounted inside a space defined in the vehicle body section. The second element has a drive arm (5) with flange section formed on the outer section of the drive arm.
