<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water treatment material which can continuously granulate and in which bacteria is easily propagated and also hardly left, and which is excellent in eliminating ability of relatively strong granular or massive nitrate nitrogens in wastewater. <P>SOLUTION: The water treatment material is for use in denitrification of nitrate nitrogens by a biological treatment by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, and further for use in dephosphorization. The material contains the powder of an alkaline (earth) metal carbonate such as limestone of 30-70 parts by weight and sulfur powder of 30-70 parts by weight and is constituted by integrating the powders by compounding a water-insoluble or hardly-soluble organic binder of 0.1-3.0 parts by weight on the basis of both the above materials of 100 parts by weight.
