<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and effectively improve the contrast of target images. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing circuit 112 in an X ray image pickup device 100 performs processing for improving the contrast of target images. At first, a frequency component decomposing circuit 113 decomposes an image into component values in a plurality of frequency bands, and obtains a coefficient in each frequency band. A coefficient conversion circuit 114 converts a coefficient value so that the frequency distribution of a coefficient value in each frequency band can be turned to be predetermined frequency distribution concerning at least one of a plurality of frequency bands.
