PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which detects idle rotation and skid ranging from large one to small one slip with reliability. SOLUTION: The idle rotation and skid detector comprises a counter 11 which counts the number of pulses of a multi-axle speed generator; a pulse number frequency doubler counter 12, speed change processing portions 15a and 15b which convert the count value on any counter into sampling speed for a plurality of hours; an acceleration/deceleration computing portion 21<SB>1</SB>which computes acceleration/deceleration with respect to each converted sampling speed; start/end detecting means 31a to 34a and 37a to 40a which detect the start/end of the idle rotation/skid by using the sampling speed for a plurality of hours, each acceleration/deceleration, and linear data stored in advance; and judging means 35, 36, 41 to 43, and 23 are provided judge from these start/end signals whether idle rotation or skid is underway, and to select idle rotation/skid of the short time sampling speed in a large idle rotation/skid, or those of the long sampling time speed in a small idle rotation/skid, and to judge whether it is idle rotation or skid for each axle.
