PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem on the variation of load in separating a spindle from a supporting shaft to move a steering column relatively to a car body in automobile collision. SOLUTION: This shock absorbing steering device 1 has a first supporting mechanism 18 for relatively movably supporting the steering column 4 in collision. The first supporting mechanism 18 comprises an upper fixed bracket 22 fixed to the car body 17, an upper column bracket 23 fixed to the steering column 4, and the spindle 24 inserted into the supporting holes 30, 32 of both brackets 22, 23. The supporting hole 30 is opened through a separation groove 34. A plurality of holding plates 37 abutted on the spindle 24 for holding the spindle 24 in the supporting hole 30 are mounted in a state of being separated from each other in the axial direction S of the spindle 24. The plurality of holding plates 37 are bent and deformed by the spindle 24 in collision to allow the separation of the spindle 24 into the separation groove 34, determines the separation load with high accuracy without variation, and prevents the deformation of the spindle 24.
