PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a leader block assembly with a tapered engagement surface for a data storage tape cartridge. SOLUTION: The leader block assembly 68 can be inserted into the data storage tape cartridge. The leader block assembly 68 includes a leader block 20 and a tape clamp 101. The leader block 20 defines opposing side faces, and at least one opposing side forms the engagement surface defining a region of constant slope adapted to selectively engage a cartridge detent.
