PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently performing a character input while reducing the moving quantity or pressing-down frequency of a finger when performing the character input in a portable information terminal by use of a numeric keypad and a limited number of keys by eliminating the labor hour of shifting the position of the finger to move a cursor when the numeric keypad is arranged distant from a cursor key. SOLUTION: A cursor moving function is provided in part of the numeric keypad, whereby the burden for the movement or pressing-down frequency of the finger to move the cursor in the character input is reduced. In this input method, also, a function for predicting and displaying, when pressing-down is not required, the next pattern character without pressing-down is provided, whereby the time and burden required for formation of electronic mail are reduced.
