The invention relates to a method of securing the updating of software programs of numerous decoders, which is based on the generation of a signatu re using an asymmetric private key. A decoder is updated by downloading a data block comprising a patch and the signature thereof from a management centre, said block being stored in a random access memory. The signature is decrypte d with a current public key from a list contained in a first non-volatile memo ry of the decoder and, subsequently, verified. In the event of a match, a comma nd initiates the installation of the patch in a second non-volatile Flash memor y and the deactivation of the current key. The purpose of the invention is to reduce considerably the impact of the discovery of a private key by a systematic analysis of the decoder software operation or to increase significantly the time and means required for the process used to determine same.
