PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce print data being discarded in crop printing, and to minimize the quantity of ink overflowing a recording sheet. SOLUTION: In the first invention, a print head is provided with a print means, an optical sensor is mounted on a carriage, and the reading position of the optical sensor is located in the upstream of the recording sheet print means. Since the forward end of a recording sheet carried accurately by means of a carrying roller can be detected immediately before, detection accuracy of the forward end of the recording sheet is high and overflow of data or ink can be minimized when the forward end or rear end is printed in crop printing. In the second invention, an optical sensor is mounted on a carriage, and the reading position of the optical sensor is located ahead of a print means in the scanning direction of the carriage during print operation. Since the left and right ends of a recording sheet can be detected immediately before, overflow of data or ink can be minimized when the left and right ends are printed in crop printing.
