PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a holding apparatus which holds the objects to be joined in friction stir joining, and prevents the defect in joining caused by the misalignment of the objects. SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a base 24 provided on a predetermined position, holding parts 25a and 25b holding the objects 22 to be joined, and a connection part 26 connecting the base 24 with the holding parts 25a and 25b so that the holding parts 25a and 25b can be displaced with respect to the base 24. In the case when a backing member 23 is moved, and the objects 22 are abutted on the backing member 23 till it reaches the set position for subjecting the objects 22 to solid phase stirring, in a state where the objects 22 are abutted on the backing member 23, the objects 22 are moved together with the backing member 23, and the objects 22 can be arranged at supporting positions to which the objects 22 are to be supported. Thus, the phenomenon that a joining tool 21 is abutted on the objects 22 prior to the backing member 23 can be prevented, and the defect in joining caused by the misalignment of the objects 22 can be eliminated.
