The apparatus generates a sawtooth current in a beam deviation coil (34) using a bipolar power transistor (TP). The base of the transistor receives positive feedback from a coil (L2) in a transformer. The transistor is in conducting mode. A blocking transistor (TB) receives a signal at line frequency and alternately conducts and blocks the power transistor. An integrator (4,8) has a high input (RC) when active and a low input in standby mode and is coupled to the line frequency signal (SY) through a resistor (R2). The output is connected to a circuit (R2,C2,6,TO) which changes by a factor the shape of the controlling line frequency signal according to the integrator output voltage.
