In a process to operate a fuel-injected petrol engine, the stratified lean-burn zone is extended by a homogenous lean-burn zone. The extension is made prior to reaching the range in which the engine may be operated in lean-burn mode within the homogenous range. The engine is operated more frequently in lean-burn mode. The combined lean burn (1) and homogenous lean burn (2) mode reduces the quantity of unburned air, thereby reducing the Lambda value in comparison with the mixture in the stratified burn mode. The transition boundary (5) is defined by the engine load and/or engine speed between the extended lean-burn zone (1, 2) and the homogenous operating range (4). The transition boundary is detected using residual unburned oxygen in the exhaust gases and the mixture lambda value. This value determines the rate at which NOx is taken up and retained within the NOx storage catalytic converter. |
