Device for guiding a chain (1) comprises a guide rail consisting of a base body (2a) provided with a flat nominal profile as a bearing surface (3) for the chain. The base body has lateral curved sections (4) leading to rims (2b). Before initiation of the device the width (bA) of the bearing surface for the chain is less than the width (bK) of the chain. An Independent claim is also included for a process for guiding a chain, especially for operating the above device. Preferred Features: Before initiation of the device the outer peripheral lines (10) of the outer chain links (7) rest against the curved sections.
