An undercoat for application at metal substrate, which is intended to be used for producing articles and application a top layer of coating, containing zinc-containing pigment and silicate binding agent, which comprises an aqueous silica sol having a SiO2/M2O mole ratio not less than 25:1 (M is the total of alkali metal and ammonium ions), and wherein the ratio of the pigment volume concentration to the critical pigment volume concentration is less than 1. A method for application of aforementioned undercoat, which can comprise after the drying of undercoat to the dryness at the contact or treatment with the solution restorative the film, or substrate submersion with applicated undercoat into water, or maintaining in the atmosphere with relative humidity not less than 50 %.
