[Also in Division C2] Terpene hydrocarbons are obtained from organo-magnesium compounds (R<SP>1</SP> ) n Mg, where n is 2-8 and each R<SP>1</SP> is a C 4-40 conjugated diolefin optionally containing one or more further double bonds, by hydrolysis with a compound containing active hydrogen, e.g. water, mineral acid, an organic acid, a phenol or an amine. The products have a greater molecular weight than the diolefins R<SP>1</SP>, typical of which are butadiene, isoprene, myrcene, alpha-phellandrene and alloocimene. In examples, terpenes are produced from compounds in which R<SP>1</SP> is isoprene or myrcene.
